Skriveri Research Centre is the only institution in Latvia engaged in the breeding of legumes and perennial grasses. Over the recent years, new tetraploid varieties of legumes and grasses have been released. The main three stages could be found in the development of the perennial grasses at the Skriveri Research Centre of the Latvia University of Agriculture. Initially for breeding as preliminary materials mainly different forms of local perennial grass varieties were used, but this practice gave no satisfactory results. During the second stage, starting material was gained from the former USSR Institute of Crop Production or from the World Variety Bank through other ways. We have started breeding tetraploid forms, interspecies hybridization and artificial pollination of legumes. The third stage - modern times - is characterized by widening of contacts with the breeders in Western countries, USA and Canada, widely using varieties developed in these countries as starting material.
