Dambergs, E., Latvia Univ. of Agriculture, Skriveri (Latvia). Skriveri Research Centre. Dept. of Plant Breeding
New varieties and lines of tetraploid red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) have been developed in Skriveri Research Centre. Fertility of tetraploid and diploid varieties of red clover depends on plant inherent capacity and outer conditions. The flowering of diploid and tetraploid and tetraploid red clover is impeded by a rainy season, insufficient pollination, fluctuations in temperatures and other conditions. The fertility of tetraploid and diploid varieties of red clover may be increased doubling the count of chromosomes from 2n to 4n (from 14 to 28). To this day predominate opinion, that tetraploid red clover is under fertility that of diploid red clover. Tetraploid red clover gives diversity seed yields compare to diploid red clover. High yields and good fertility are possible both in tetraploid and diploid red clover.
