Assessment of levels of persistent organic pollutants in municipal wastewater sludge

The government of Latvia signed the Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants on May 23, 2001. Upon completion of UNDP/GEF Enabling Activity project and preparation of Persistent Organic Pollutants National Implementation Plan (NIP), the Government ratified the Convention on October 28, 2004. The principal aims of the study are: to obtain baseline data on some POPs (dioxins, polybrominated diphenylethers (PDBE) levels in municipal wastewater sludgeand to evaluate the tendency of distribution of POPs levels over the time by comparing the data with results of earlier studies. The scope of the study includes sampling and analysis of wastewater treatment plant sludge for persistent organic pollutants from 9 municipal wastewater treatment plants in Latvia.
