Changes of electrocardiogram QT interval in German Shepherd and Cocker Spaniel dogs during premedication and general anaesthesia

The effects of premedication (atropine sulphate together with acepromazine maleate) followed by general anaesthesia (ketamine hydrochloride together with diazepam) on the second lead of ECG (electrocardiogram) QT interval (s) in 34 German Shepherds and 32 Cocker Spaniel dogs were studied. The premedication agents used by us caused a significant elongation of ECG QT interval in both Cocker Spaniels and German Shepherd dogs. The general anaesthetics (narcosis drugs) ketamine hydrochloride and diazepam used after premedication led to significant shortening of QT interval. In German Shepherds this shortening was statistically significant at the 45th and 60th minute, while in Cocker spaniels statistically significant at the 30th and 45th minute. These changes in the electrocardiogram depended on the breed of animal, but on the gender. The possible dependence of QT interval alterations on breed should be taken into consideration in practical veterinary medicine when working with purebred animals.
