Surface activity of humic substances depending on their origin

Humic substances are a general category of naturally occurring, biogenic, heterogeneous organic substances that can be characterised as being yellow to black in colour, of high molecular weight and refractory. Surface tension measurement defined humic substances as surface active substances. A micellar structural model of humic susbtances has been suggested, at the same time, but there are only a few studies on the factors affecting the surface tension of humic solutions. The objective of this study was to study changes in surface activity depending on the origin and properties of humic substances. The ability to influence surface tensions of solutions of humic substances very much depends on the origin of humic substances. many industrially produced humic materials have demonstrated no or insignificant impact on surface tension of their solutions, but humic substances isolated from natural environments (water, soil, peat, sediments) have shown a significant impact of surface tension of their solutions. Thus, there exist direct links between the origin, structure of humic substances and their ability to influence the surface tension of aquatic solutions. The surface tension-pH curves of humic substances featured a minimum for all solutions, declining steeply from higher and lower pH values. The decrease in surface tension with decreasing pH reflects the gradual neutralisation of acidic sites, which created amphiphilic species that migrated to the surface. The surface tension of solutions of humic substances were shown to decrease with increasing concentration, as well as in the presence of metal salts.
Show more [+] Less [-]Latvian. Humusvielas ir dabiskas izcelsmes biogēnas un heterogēnas organiskās vielas ar raksturigu nokrāsu no dzeltenas līdz melnai, augstu molekulmasu un norību vidē. Virsmas spraiguma mērījumi pierāda, ka humusvielas ir virsmas aktīvas vielas. Ir izstrādāti humusvielu micellu struktūru modeļi, tomēr zināmi ir tikai nedaudzi pētījumi par faktoriem, kuri ietekmē humusvielu šķīdumu virsmas spraigumu. Šī pētījuma mērķis ir pētīt humusvielu virsmas aktivitāti atkarībā no to izcelsmes un īpašībām. Humusvielu spēja ietekmēt šķīdumu virsmas spraigumu lielā mērā ir atkarīga no to izcelsmes. Daudzas rūpnieciski ražotas humusvielas to šķīdumu virsmas spraigumu tikpat kā neietekmē, savukārt dabiskas izcelsmes humusvielas (ūdeņu, augsnes, kūdras un sedimentu) šķīdumu virsmas spraigumu ietekmē ievērojami. Pastāv tieša saistība starp humusvielu izcelsmi, struktūru un to spēju ietekmēt ūdens šķīdumu virsmas spraigumu. Virsmas spraiguma un pH atkarības līknēm visos šķīdumos raksturīgas minimālās vērtības, strauji pazeminoties pie augstākiem un zemākiem pH rādītājiem. Virsmas spraiguma pazemināšanās, pazeminoties pH, ir izskaidrojama ar pakāpenisku karboksilgrupu un fenolhidroksilgrupu neitralizāciju, kas ir radījis amfifīlas struktūras, kuras migrē uz šķīduma virspusi. Humusvielu šķīdumu virsmas spraigums samazinās, pieaugot humusvielu koncentrācijai, kā arī metālu sāļu klātbūtnē.
