The most popular renewable heating resource in Latvia is wood, but there are other agricultural by-products like straw and grass that could be used for this purpose. The aim of this research carried out at State Stende Cereals Breeding Institute in 2009/2010 was to evaluate the straw of winter cereals as the possible source for heating. The main features of high-quality biomass to be used in heat production are high biomass yield, low ash content, chemical composition and calorific value of winter rye (Secale cereale L), triticale (Triticosecale Wittm), and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The highest straw yield with 14% moisture was obtained from the winter wheat. The highest heating value and energy, as well as the lowest ash content were gained from the straw of winter rye.
