The authors describes apple biology and nutritive value, informs about the history and breeding of apples in Latvia. The main chapters include orchard establishment, choice of varieties and rootstocks, growing techniques, including grafting, tree nutrition and irrigation, fruit development and harvest, storage, main pests and diseases. Apple-tree training and pruning are given special attention, for different tree ages and orchards types. A large chapter is dedicated to the characterization of the most widely grown apple varieties in Latvia - their fruit and tree characteristics, resistance to diseases and winter-hardiness. The book describe also the best columnar and crab apples and briefly characterizes the most popular ornamental apple species. The newest apple cultivars of Latvian breeding after year 2000 constitute a separate section. The book will be a useful guide for all gardeners, from those who have a few old apple trees at their farm to those who are just planning to plant an apple orchard
