Encapsulation of seeds in a sodium alginate capsule makes it possible to sow pre-germinated seeds thus protecting seeds from a mechanical damage. The effect of encapsulation on germination of the dill seeds was determined. Two encapsulation methods were tested: the formation of a capsule from inside out and from outside in. Germination was higher when the capsule was formed outside in. The effect of concentration of sodium alginate and calcium chloride on germination of seeds was tested. The concentration of the two substances did not significantly affect germination. However, encapsulation delayed germination compared to the control. Therefore, further experiments were conducted: pre-germinated seeds were encapsulated, and untreated seeds were encapsulated and pre-germinated in the capsule. The time of longer pre-germination (72 h) increased final germination and decreased the time to the emergence of cotyledons by four days compared to the control.
