Winter garlic cultivation in Latvia a technology is traditionally used in which garlic (cloves) are planted in autumn (October/November) in the field where they take root, start growing (create roots and a small sprout) and overwinters. In the spring, garlic starts intensive vegetative growth, the crop is harvested in July/August. Although in general Latvia has everyone the necessary prerequisites for growing garlic, particularly unfavourable climatic conditions in certain autumn/winter periods and unsuitable soil composition are factors that negatively affect the yield of garlic. Because garlic is very sensitive to meteorological conditions and growing environment, unfavourable wintering conditions can significantly worsen the quality of the planting (plants die, they are excellent not possible due to frequent thaws or autumn rains plant them). Therefore, a new innovative winter garlic cultivation technology was developed within the framework of the project “Modernization of winter garlic cultivation for safe harvest in organic farms” No. 18-00-A01620- innovative technology 000014, excluding the influence of unfavourable climatic conditions on the development of garlic during the winter period. The yield of garlic in 2020 was adequate in Latvia average, reaching 7.5 t haE−1. This growing season had higher rainfall (336 mm), which had a positive effect on crop formation. The plants grown with the innovative method also produced relatively well — reaching 7.0 t haE−1, which was very close to the harvest of traditionally grown garlic on the farm.
