The modern apple market has become an industrial production sector that requires cheap, voluminous, uniform, well-stored, high-quality products. The new apple varieties must combine fruit quality, suitable for the climate, good and regularly producing, easy-care tree, and complex resistance to important apple diseases. The best Latvian varieties are also promising for cultivation in other Baltic countries and Nordic countries, where the climate is similar. The author examines the following topics in the article: 1. What is breeding and why is it necessary? 2. Classical selection. 3. Registration of new varieties and protection. 4. Apple tree selection tasks. 5. Selection of apple varieties in Latvia. The history of one variety — apple ‘Dace’ is described separately, and the table shows the latest Latvian apple varieties, the breeder's name, protection, and the characteristics of the varieties.
