Trials on the use of trellises in climbing beans were conducted at Karama (low alt., 1400 m.a.s.l.), Rubona (medium alt., 1650 m.a.s.l.), and Rwerere (high alt., 2300 m.a.s.l.) exptl. stations of the Institut des Sciences Agronomiques du Rwanda. Climbing beans proved to have good potential to increase overall bean yields. These decreased when climbing beans were intercropped with maize. In appropriate areas, good yields of climbing beans were obtained when beans were relay cropped with maize, at 62,500 trellises/ha and hill-planting method (ISAR method), and 30,000-40,000 trellises/ha with the traditional sowing method and a trellis length of 1.0-1.5 m.
