As the conventional mode of plowing is expensive and labour-consuming, in world tillage practice attepts are being made to replace plowing by subsurface cultivation, chisel plowing as well as by reduced plowing depth. Since 1983 the Latvian University of Agriculture Soil Management Department has been engaged in research to study: 1) feasibility of replacing 0.22 m deep plowing by 0.10-0.12 m deep stubble field cultivation in succession of 1-3 years in 6 - field grain crop rotation; 2) agro-chemical changes in the soil; 3) stubble-field cultivation instead of plowing, its effect on weed level in sowings and on grain yield. These studies show that changes of organic matter content between variants of soil tillage are insignificant. Diverse effect of studied soil tillage systems on grain yield level was not stated. Reduced soil tillage system is feasible in a meliorated soil free from perennial weeds.
