Host choice of Aphidius ervi Haliday on the bluegreen aphid (BGA) (Acyrthosiphon kondoi Shinji) and the pea aphid (PA) (Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris)) was studied under laboratory conditions. Factors tested for their effect on host choice were: host age and size, host movement and parental host stock of the parasitoid. The influence of aphids' host plant was also tested by using lucerne and two subterranean clover cultivars. In trials using a Y-tube olfactometer A. ervi showed a positive response to the odours from both BGA and PA, the parasitoid prefers larger BGA and smaller PA. this choice is influenced by size and degree of defensive behaviour of the hosts. Parasitoid development in BGA and PA was compared: there was no significant difference in emergence rates of A. ervi from either host. The role of A. ervi in the biological control of BGA and PA is discussed.
