Sex expression in the cucumber is determined genetically, however modifications can be induced by external factors. Possible modifications by the use of Ethephon and Silver salts were tested under the local environmental conditions. Application of Ethephon (50, 250, 450 ppm) increased the percentage of female flowers by 35.80 and 82% respectively. Significant reduction of the plant height was observed in all plants treated with Ethephon. Application of Ag(S2O3)2 in gynoecious varieties induced the development of male flowers in all ages of the plants treated. There were not observed generally phytotoxicity symptoms because of the applications.
