Improving agricultural information services of small island nations in the Pacific region. A regional plant protection information system will insure that the non-conventional documents that are so valuable to agricultural researchers are not inadvertently lost.

The results of agricultural research in the Pacific region, spanning some 70 years, are mostly published in a non-conventional form and not easily accessed. A program to collect, document and disseminate the information of plant protection is underway, utilizing recent opportunities afforded by advances in computer technology. Several different types of database will be established: for example, bibliographies of Pacific literature, results from pest and disease surveys, and index to agricultural journals published in the region, and a database of pesticide use. The regional plant protection information service will enhance national capabilities through training in database manipulation, ultimately to improve plant protection within the region.
