Identification of widely adaptable coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) genotypes using the Beta methodology.

A multivariate regression methodology, known as the beta response model, was used to determine the coconut genotypes that are widely adapted to varying environments. The adaptability ranking of the different genotypes revealed that the coconut hybrids are more adaptable to three varying environmental conditions than our local tall and dwarf cultivars particularly on the early reproductive stages of the palm. Two foreign hybrids, Equatorial Green Dwarf x West African tall (EGD x WAT) and Malayan Yellow Dwarf x West African tall) (MYD x WAT) proved to be the most adapted genotypes to the three environments. However, our local hybrid, Catigan x Bago-Oshiro (CAT x BAO) have also shown promising potential to be a good alternative planting material for recommendation to our coconut farmers. The results suggest that more local coconut genotypes must be evaluated for their general adaptability considering the wide genetic variability of the crop and its importance to our national coconut replanting program.
