A uniformity trial was conducted to determine the optimum plot size and shape and the number of replications for sugarcane field experiments. The result showed that 70 times the basic unit was the estimated optimum plot size relating to soil heterogenecity and relative costs. Two shapes were found to fit the computed optimum plot size; 10 meters by 21 hills and 5 meters by 42 hills. For all the yield characters considered (TC/Ha, PS/TC and PS/Ha), 10 meters by 21 hills laid out across the area proved to be more accurate in terms of variability involved and less expensive in relation to the number of replications required. The optimum replication number necessary for the computed optimum plot size and shape was estimated to be three (3) replications.
