Monosaccharides - derived from polysaccharides - are released by acid hydrolysis, reduced by NaBH4, and detected as their alditol acetates using 2-desoxy-glucose or myo-onositole as the internal standard. For complex mixtures a group separation of organic acids, amino acids, and carbohydrates by the use of ion exchange resins is suggested. The high amounts of monosaccharides are found in the humic rendzina profile followed by brown earth and podzol.
