Some morphological characteristics of chick neuroectoderm cells in culture and their evolution during neurulation have been analysed by means of scanning electron microscopy. Cells are classified as protrusive and featureless. The protrusive activity of cellular surface, shape and cell diameters are studied for each subpopulation. The cells show in culture a minor protrusive activity (it decreases both protrusive cell percentage and surface activity) as the neurulation proceeds. Diameters are major in protrusive cells than in fetureless cells as well as in cultures of 24 h then in 12 h. Cellular diameters remain very constant at all stages. A function of membrane reserve is attributed to the blebs that are present in protrusive cells.
