Feasibility of utilizing sugarcane juice as swine feed.

A feeding trial involving 12 weanlings with an average initial liveweight of 22.0 kg was conducted to determine whether sugarcane juice plus protein concentrate can effectively and economically replace commercial hog mash. The animals were randomly allotted into 2 treatments, namely: 1 - Commercial feed (Control), and 2 - Sugarcane juice + soybean oil meal and fish meal. Results showed that pigs fed sugarcane juice-based diet grew faster (0.57 vs. 0.61 kg/d) and converted feed better (3.28 vs. 2.94 kg feed/kg gain) than those given the commercial feed preparation. The economic implications of the results of the feeding trial and the feasibility of the utilization of the whole sugarcane plant as animal feed are discussed.
