A technical review examines available evidence concerning the possible association of dietary and serum cholesterol with colon cancer incidence as derived from animal experiments and human epidemiology studies. Specific attention is given to: epidemiological and experimental studies of dietary cholesterol and colon cancer; epidemiological and clinical studies of serum/plasma cholesterol in colon cancer; and animal experiments and drug and dietary intervention trials for lowering serum cholesterol. An overall assessment of the implications of these studies is included.
