A research was conducted in 35 goat and 13 sheep flocks in the Northern Sporades in order that prevalence of paratuberculosis and Maedi-Visna be recorded. The flocks that were investigated constitute the total goat and sheep population of the islands Alonissos, Scopelos and Skiathos. From each flock a random sample of adult animals was examined that constituted the 20% to 38% of the total population of each flock. Blood and faeces samples were examined from each animal. Blood sera were tested for antibodies against M. paratuberculosis and Maedi-Visna virus by AGID test. The faeces were examined for the existence of treated statistically to determine the prevalence of the disease in the flocks. Regardly to paratuberculosis, the flocks of Northern Sporades should be considered as negative. On the contrary 15.38% of the sheep flocks of the area is infected from Maedi-Visna with a prevalence between 5.6% and 13%.
