Heterotrophic growth of the non-heterocystous filamentous blue-green alga Oscillatoria sp. UCSB-8 in nitrogen-free medium was studied in the light and in the dark. It could grow photoheterotrophically in the light on 0.4% glucose, fructose and sucrose in the presence of DCMU, a specific inhibitor of photosynthesis. This organism could just survive chemoheterotrophically in the dark. The growth rate observed in photoheterotrophic cultures was slower compared to that in photoautotrophic cultures. Variation in photosynthetic pigments was observed between cultures grown under autotrophic and heterotrophic conditions.
