Task force 1: environmental risk factors in coronary artery disease.

A technical report by an expert task force summarizes and separately discusses current scientific knowledge of the adverse effect of specific environmental factors as risks for coronary heart disease (CHD). Specific attention is given to: the central role of diet, smoking, and exercise in the cause and prognosis of ischemic heart disease (IHD); the enhanced CHD risk from low socioeconomic status; the role of occupational stress in CHD risk; the increased CHD risk from lack of social support in promoting health behavior; and the effect of physical environmental (noise; pollutants) and psychosocial (low socioeconomic status; inadequate social support systems; high crime rate residential areas) factors in increasing IHD morbidity and mortality risks. Further research needs also are identified and discussed.(wz).
