Isolation and characterization of Bacillus thuringiensis strains pathogenic to caterpillar and mosquito larvae [in Bangladesh].

Seven Bacillus thuringiensis strains have been isolated from soil samples and from dead caterpillar and mosquito larvae. The isolated strains were characterized by comparing with a reference B. thuringiensis strain. Four strains showed pesticidal activity against lepidopteran (caterpillar) and dipteran (mosquito) larvae. Isolated B. thuringiensis strains J and B showed their larvicidal activity against hair caterpillar whereas strains DU1 and DU2 were active against mosquito larva. In contrast, reference B. thuringiensis strain IS2 showed weak activity against both caterpillar and mosquito larvae. Fifty percent larvicidal activity (LD50) for each of the isolates either on caterpillar or mosquito larvae were found to be 10(8) colony forming units per ml (cfu/ml) after 72 of incubation.
