Two varities of field tomato were compared: the high one Najwczesniejszy and the dwarf one New Yorker, as well as several growing and training methods: on ridges, staked, at vires, using supports in shape of plastics rings and wire baskets, pine bark and black film mulching and check as a control. It was found that yielding and fruit quality depended on conditions of plant vegetation, cultivation method and variety. The highest total yield, marketable yield and gross income were obtained with mulching the soil with black film and pine bark. The increase of total yield as compared with check was on average 36 percent for black film and 15 percent for the bark. On mulched plots higher soil temperatures and lower variability of temperature were observed as compared with noncovered one. Pruning plants caused lowering of total yield, marketable yield and gross income. The traditional growing method, simple and the cheapest gave good results only in years with climatic conditions favourable for tomato, whereas in worse conditions it proved deceptive.
