Laboratory simulation of the surface morphology of self-mulching and non self-mulching vertisols, 1. Materials, methods and preliminary results.

Pillai McGarry U.P.P. | Collis George N.
Of 3 Vertisols investigated (1 mulching and 2 non self-mulching), there were differences in shear strength in the field, clay type, ESP and exchangeable Ca:Mg ratio. With repeated wetting and drying the self-mulching soil developed a surface with a more complex organization of structural features than either of the non-mulching soils. The self-mulching soil generated a granular structure and developed the widest cracks. Most elements of the surface morphology observed in the field were achieved in the laboratory simulation.
