After high periferal progesterone level of non-pregnant mares a sudden quantitative decrease can be observed. Simultaneously, the estrogene level increases and signs of oestrus start. A correlation can be found between the Ocsag's indices, qualifying the signs of oestrus, and quantity of estrogen. Mating of mares is expedient when the level of 17 beta-estradiol is the highest in the peripheral blood. Development of corpus luteum ensures high peripheral progesterone concentration in the non-pregnant animals for 6-7 days. During the luteal phase the enlargement of follicles does not result in signs of oestrus. Relatively high oestrogen levels can be measured in the blood up to 9 days postpartum. The cycle after foaling oestrus can be considered full diphasic.
