This report gives an overview of the state of art of milking technology (milking robots, side by side milking parlours). Although some steps have already been taken over by the machine, complete automatisation of the milking process, including inspection and care of the animals, is possible only by using a milking robot. Its application on Swiss farms is to be expected in a couple of years only. Side by side milking parlours are a space-saving, relatively low-cost alternative to other group parlours. However, the standard side exit does not offer the desirable increase in milking performance per hour. Where enough space is available, a front exit system is therefore preferable. So far, due to their high costs and space requirements, milking parlours have not been widely used on Swiss farms with their relatively small stock numbers. Here, side by side parlours might offer a compromise solution.
