The livestock sector seems particularly suited and ready for the sweeping innovations of today's computer technology and data processing methods. This is especially true regarding economic data for larger and more modern farms where random methods of gathering information and traditional budgeting techniques are no longer adequate. For these farms, the Duplin double accounting system (general and analytical) and successive elaborations (financial, by sector, etc.), seems to be indispensable. Economic and technical data are integrated in an information system for the use of management (SIG) that requires a comprehensive data gathering and processing apparatus. The possible outputs are examined, as in systems already operating in other countries and as available in computer centers in Italy and abroad (AIA, for example). The results are then fed into micro-computers of the type that medium and large agricultural firms can afford today and the costs of the hardware in relation to the benefits of the software are calculated. It is pointed out that the benefits are substantial in the case of cattle farms, especially where advanced technical procedures are already in use for feeding, selection, regulation of milking machines and climate control. These information processing methods require that economic and technical data be integrated with accounting systems. Micro computers have made this integration economically feasible, even in more complete and complex ways than are now in use. Since computer technology has only recently become economical and will spread in the next few years, it is to be hoped that a coordinated effort will be made to promote optimal utilization of this technology through exchanges of informations and definitions of standards.
