This study reports on variation in cumulative milk yield (CMY), measured over first 3 lactations, due to genetic and non-genetic causes in different grades of Friesian x Zebu cows. The effects of genetic grade and herd were significant, but period and season of birth and age at first calving had non-significant influence on CMY. The value of CMY increased gradually with the level of Friesian inheritance from 1/8 to 1/2. Halfbreds had the highest value for CMY and did not differ significantly from the cows having more than 50% exotic inheritance.
