The effects of various dietary fibers on blood cholesterol were studied in 48 growing, control-fed rats for 8 weeks. The rats were given one of five isofibrous diets or a no-fiber diet. During the eighth week total fecal output was collected and apparent digestibility of dry matter (DDM) in the diet was estimated. On day 57 blood samples were collected and serum cholesterol was determined. A significant negative response between serum cholesterol and DDM was observed. A higher ratio of coprostanol/cholesterol and lower deoxy-cholic in feces significantly favored lowering of serum cholesterol. It was concluded that at subnormal energy intake, digestible energy was inversely related to serum cholesterol levels.
