The application of strongly simplified indicators for the checking of sustainability leads to false conclusions combined with poor exploitation of the production potential of forests. The transition from a stand-based way of thinking to a single-tree approach, including all its consequences, is shown by the example of the forestry situation in the region of Buelach (Switzerland).
