A medium-term effect of the urgently needed increase in food production in developing countries will result in both an improvement in cultivation methods and in an enlargement of the agricultural area in these regions. In Egypt, where farmland enlargement is only possible with adequate irrigation, intensifying cropping will take place on existing cultivated areas. From investigations on tillage with various implements and methods, recommendations for adapted mechanization are deduced in the first part of this contribution. In the humid tropics, en enlargement of farmland does often not occur because of the labour bottlenecks for tillage and weed control. Here mechanization should offer the prerequisites for enlarging the cultivated area and simultaneously securing yield increases in the long run. The second part of the contribution presents approaches - gained from experiences in Tanzania - for adjusting cropping systems and discusses the necessary farm machinery.
