Inheritance of some maize ear characteristics.

Inheritance of quantitative characteristics depends on numerous genes or polygenic system and is largely influenced by the environment. Knowledge of their broader inheritance can arise breeders effectiveness in certain breeding programmes. For investigation of ear and kernel characteristics inheritance, 2 SC hybrids with P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 generations in 2 years, were used. Heritability in narrow sense (h2n) was found rather low for all characteristics, except for row and kernel number in second cross (h2n=0.29 and 0.38, 1st year, and h2n=0.54 and 0.43, 2nd year, respectively). Higher estimates were found for heritability in wide sense (h2w). Mean values of h2w were found for number of rows in the both crosses (h2w=0.23-0.58) and for ear length in the first cross (h2w=0.47 and 0.48). Very high values of h2w were found for grain number in the second cross (h2w=0.72 and 0.82). For other characteristics high values of h2w, were found. In both crosses, the similar estimates for h2w for all characteristics, were not significantly different.
