The fresh and brackish water pollution in Bangladesh is reviewed, using published papers, reports and observation. The nature and sources of the pollutants with their possible effect on water quality and on aquatic organisms are covered. Some modifications of the natural habitat due to the environmental alterations (deforestation, embankments and reclamation of fishing grounds) and their possible effect on fisheries resources are discussed. Present condition of the main rivers and impounded water bodies are also described with recommendations for the control of the pollution problems.
