Design and construction of a low-cost automated, accelerated field simulator used in decay and preservative evaluation.

Accelerated field stimulators (AFS) have proven to be valuable facilities for evaluating wood decay resistance and preservative effectiveness. Because maintenance of these units to maintain the proper environmental condition for optimal decay attack can be tedious, an automated system was designed and constructed. The unit was constructed with low-cost commonly available materials and controls. We anticipate that other low-cost AFS units could be constructed by groups that do not yet have facilities to provide simulated decay conditions that approximate natural decay conditions better than soil-block type assays.
