Of the 800-900 Pandanus species reported, 52 were reportedly found in the Philippines, some of which are indigenous. Little chemical work has been done in this botanically complex genus. Piperidine type alkaloids were isolated from the leaves of P. amaryllifolius. Several Pandanus species from Manila, Isabela, Laguna and Bicol are currently being worked on either for their alkaloids and/or their biologically active compounds. It is hoped that the study of the chemical constituents may facilitate taxonomic reevaluation of these documented species. Selected Pandanus species were tested for their antimicrobiological activities, toxicity, antitubercular activity and diuretic property. This paper will present the findings on the chemical constituents detected and isolated from selected Pandanus species. Results of their biological testings will also be reported.
