Fauna of exotic insects in Japan.
1995
Morimoto N. | Kiritani K.
A list of the exotic insects in Japan is presented. The list includes 239 species of exotic insects and 85 species of possible exotic insects. Exotic insects are defined as "those species reproducing naturally in a designated area which they can reach only by unusual means, e.g. air currents, ocean currents and accidental or intentional introduction". In Japan, there are a total of 29,292 recorded insects of which 239 (0.8%) are exotic species. Of the 239 species, Coleoptera, Homoptera, Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera represent 75, 65, 28 and 25 species, respectively. These orders account for 81% of all exotic insects, only the orders of Blattaria, Isoptera, and Thysanoptera include more than 5% of exotic insects in their Japanese fauna. Of the total of 29,292 Japanese species, 2,435 (8%) are regarded as insect pests in Japan. Among the 239 exotic species, however, as many as 72% are pest species. The importance of "man-made disturbed areas" as reservoirs for exotic pests must be emphasized to prevent exotic species from becoming established in Japan as pests.
