Ten lines of Spanish-Valencia and Virginia peanut were crossed in all possible combinations to form a 10 x 10 complete diallel set in 1977. These 45 F1 crosses were tested for heterosis and combining ability in 1979. Advance generation of F2, F3 and F4 were made by using single seed descent method, and at the end of each generation, inferior crosses were discarded. In this fifth generation, 38 crosses were grown and superior crosses were selected, using single plant selection. The crosses between Virginia x Virginia and Virginia Spanish-Valencia had higher percentage of pod-setting, number of seed per plant, seed weight per plant and 100 seed weight than Spanish-Valencia x Spanish-Valencia.
