This article desrcibes the increase in the number of cattle during recent years and the basic rearing conditions required to assure the optimum state of the animals. Neglecting these conditions leads to health disorders and a decrease in production and reproduction abilities. More detailed information is presented on calf diseases (the diarrhoeic and respiratory syndrome), problems in beef production (the diarrhoeic and respiratory syndrome, osteochondrosis, muscle hypertrophy, locomotor disorders, difficult parturition in beef meat breeds of cattle), and the diseases of dairy cows (the whole complex of production diseases, mastitis, limb diseases, and reproduction disorders). Some possibilities are also proposed for resolving the aforementioned problems, which should be done in close co-operation between owners and veterinary surgeons using current knowledge of nutrition, farm organization and technologies, the breeding of animals, and the experience of the best farmers.
