The Bureau of Nutrition and Health Promotion of the Iowa Department of Public Health was faced with the need to develop evaluation tools for reviewing a wide variety of printed and audiovisual nutrition education materials intended for target audiences ranging from health professionals to individuals with limited reading skills. It was desirable to ensure that a consistent set of criteria was used to evaluate and compare nutrition education materials in the following programs: Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC); Maternal and Child Health; Community Nutrition; and Health Promotion.
