Tissue were collected from cattle and buffaloes slaughtered at a local abattoir. In order to carry out different experiments with Sarcocystis of cattle and buffaloes, 22 dogs (6 to 8 weeks old) and 12 cats (1 to 6 weeks old) were obtained. In experiment 1, 6 dogs and 2 cats were fed approximately 250 g of freshly collected cattle oesophageal and skeletal muscles containing sarcocysts of S. cruzi and 1 dog was kept as uninfected control. In experiment 2, 250 g of freshly collected cattle oesophageal and skeletal muscles containing sarcocysts of S. hirsuta were fed to 2 cats and 2 dogs; 1 dog was kept as uninfected control. In experiment 3, 12 dogs were fed 250 g each of oesophageal muscles of buffaloes containing sarcocysts of S. levinei (microscopic), and 1 dog was used as uninfected control. The prepatent period of S. cruzi were 9-10 days, of S. hirsuta in cats was 10-11 days, of S. levinei was reported to be 12-14 days, of S. fusiformis in cats was 11 days. Oocysts and the sporocysts of all the 4 species of Sarcocystis were observed to be alike morphologically with slight differences in the dimensions.
