Yews belong to the most endangered tree species in their natural range. Specific demands on stand and light conditions combined with a slow growth were factors which prevented a broad interest in these trees in forestry. In recent years yews have drawn attention by their ability to produce taxol, a potent anti cancer drug (Nicolaou et al. 1994) and related taxanes. Although vegetative propagation of yew trees by cuttings is possible only little information exists concerning the in vitro regeneration and propagation of yew. Hakman et al (1992) and Gibson et al. (1993) reported on the establishment of callus cultures from T. brevifolia, Wickremesinhe and Arteca (1994) described cultures of Taxus x media cv. Hicksii actively synthesizing taxol 1994. The slow growth of callus and the reduced tendency to form organs in vitro prompted us to check possibilities to induce embryogenic callus cultures as described in this paper.
