Alternaria tenuissima pathogenic to pigeon pea produces a host-specific toxin in the spore germination fluid which selectively induced necrosis on pigeon pea leaves in a detached leaf assay. The leaves of the susceptible cultivar Bahar incubated in light after toxin exposure were protected from toxin-induced necrosis, while leaf necrosis was observed in treated samples in the dark after 72 hr. When toxin-treated leaves in light were subsequently placed in the dark, toxin-induced leaf necrosis proceeded independently of the period of light irradiation. On the hard, the photo-protection effect of light on toxin-induced leaf necrosis was evident when toxin-treated leaves were pre-incubated in the dark until 9 hr. The action spectrum for the photo-protection was determined with a monochromatic radiation by combining metallic interference filters and sharp cut colored glass filters. The protective effect was observed at two regions of the action spectrum, 400 and 500-550 nm.
