In trials of the 4 pre-emergent herbicides oxyfluorfen, diuron, atrazine and alachlor, atrazine and oxyfluorfen were the most effective in terms of duration of control and species of weeds controlled. Atrazine, the cheapest of the two, is recommended at 2 L per ha; oxyfluorfen should be applied at 4 L per ha. Agricultural implications of these findings are discussed.
