In Switzerland the direct injury to ware potatoes by aphids is not considered important. The primary concern is their role in seed potato production where they act as vectors of the potato leafroll virus (PLRV). The 100-leaves sampling method is well suited for estimating aphid populations. Leaves taken from the stem middle are representative of the amount and proportion of the different species. Two species, Myzus persicae and Macrosiphum euphorbiae, are present every year. Aphis nasturtii is not always present but can be very abundant some years. From 1983 to 1995 the maximum number of aphids per 100 leaves varied between 100 and 4000. A simple prediction model for estimating the maximum population density is described. An action threshold of 100 aphids per 100 leaves at the emergence of flower buds is proposed for ware potato production.
