Geese as weeders of sitao fields in Zambales [Philippines].

Initial findings showed that the geese were able to keep down weeds efficiently for 3 months and were fattened at the same time. Subsisting on growing grass leaves and occasionally ripe weed seeds with very little amount of concentrate given, the geese gave an average daily gain of 60-70 grams. Sitao seedlings were not severely damaged by the geese in spite of their webbed feet. The geese neither ate sitao leaves nor harmed the vines. After foraging, they were observed to travel quite a distance (200 meters) before drinking. Their solid green droppings served as indicator where they had foraged. In the evening they stayed in between rows of sitao poles. The geese were likewise observed to be unaffected by the insecticides used against common sitao pests and diseases.
