Sex expression in papaya (Carica papaya L.) as affected by seed location, morphological characteristics of seedling and levels of auxin.

Mojica A.C.
The experiment was conducted to determine the influence of seed location, morphological characteristics of seedling and different levels of auxin on the sex expression of papaya plant. Sex expression of papaya plant was influenced by the interaction effect of seed location and size of seedling, and different levels of auxin. The type of root system whether branchy of prominent primary roots did not influence the sexuality of papaya plant. Big seedlings produced from seeds taken from the stem-end section developed more hermaphrodite plant type while more female plant type were produced out of small seedlings from the same section. Seeds located at the stem-end (upper 1/3) and middle 1/3 section of the fruit produced less female plant type but more hermaphrodite plant type over the seeds at the blossom-end section of the fruit. Seeds located at the blossom-end section of the fruit produced more hermaphrodite plant type as the level of auxin increased up to 50 ppm. Auxin also influenced early flowering on seeds obtained from the stem-end section treated with 50 ppm.
