Three isolates of Phaeoisariopsis griseola, the pathogen causing angular leaf spot of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), collected in Zaire at Mulungu-Molehe (Zmm), at Mulungu-Tshirumbi (Zmt) and in Rwanda at Rwerere (Rrw), have been inoculated in the greenhouse on a series of differential var. for determining pathotypes of this disease in the countries of the Region. Based on the reaction of 10 var. it has been shown that the isolates Zmm, Zmt and Rrw are different. The var. A 339 and BAT 1647 which had been found to be resistant under field conditions, have proved to be resistant against all 3 isolates. These preliminary results of an on-going study show the need for breeding var. with non-specific resistance for the whole Region.
